Five Tips for Moving This Summer
The summer heat is upon us and unless you have air conditioning and a cold drink in hand, you may find yourself moving slower than usual, regardless of the task at hand. Today’s blog post is designed for those of you who are preparing to move into a new home or apartment this summer. Our expert Realtors® have compiled a list of the best planning tricks and tips to make your sweltering summertime move enjoyable, efficient, and affordable.
- Decide (and commit to) a specific moving date as soon as possible. With a date that is set in stone, you can book the necessary time off of work, recruit helpers, or hire a moving company to assist you on your big day. It also gives you a deadline so that you do not put all of your packing off until the very last moment, triggering unnecessary stress. If possible, try to choose a moving date where the weather is supposed to be nice and cool.
- Contact multiple moving companies for quotes. We typically recommend getting three moving quotes from different companies (after you have read their reviews and are certain of their reliability) before comparing prices, schedules, and reviews, ultimately booking the company that resonates with you the most.
- Take time to purge. Moving is one of the few times we are forced to go through all of our belongings and can make conscious choices to declutter and dispose of anything that we are unlikely to use in the future. Consider donating any items that you have not used in over a year rather than moving them into your new home and hiding them away in storage. This will not only lessen your load on moving day, but will also open up space in your new home.
- Order moving supplies. No one wants to be running around town collecting boxes the day before their big move. Head to your local free box suppliers (try grocery stores, liquor stores, moving truck rental companies or post offices). Once your boxes arrive, remember to label everything by room/items, indicating “fragile” on anything that might break.
- Update your mailing address. If you already know where your new home will be, take the time now to update all of your bills, credit cards, rental insurance, services and utilities to include your new mailing address. This will save yourself the stress later and open up your schedule to finally enjoy the summertime sunshine.
Now that you have a date set to move, your supplies ready and your movers booked, we hope that you can sit back, relax and enjoy the sun.
