Ottawa’s Alta Vista neighbourhood is located to the southeast of the city’s downtown core, and is a favourite place to live for its residential side streets, community atmosphere, and variety of parks, schools, and amenities. Alta Vista is bordered on the north by Smyth Road and Riverside Road, on the west by Bank Street, on the south by Walkley and Heron Roads, and on the east by St. Laurent Boulevard. The area encompasses several smaller sub-neighbourhoods, including Billings Bridge, Canterbury, Elmvale Acres, and Urbandale.
The core area of Alta Vista is primarily residential, with shopping and recreational amenities found in the surrounding sub-neighbourhoods. The area is highly walkable, with many shops and restaurants within a short distance. In addition to local bus service throughout the neighbourhood, Alta Vista is also serviced by a significant stretch of the OcTranspo Transitway, featuring several local transit stations to connect commuters to the rest of the city. With major roads surrounding the neighbourhood on all sides, it’s easy to instantly be en route to any destination within Ottawa.
Bank Street, one of the busiest roads in Ottawa, is found on the east side of Alta Vista and is home to many shops, restaurants, and businesses that service the surrounding area. Grocery stores, book stores, thrift shops, convenience stores, as well as a wide variety of eateries, cafes, and pubs, make it easy to find what you’re looking for without leaving the neighbourhood. And with the South Keys Shopping Centre just a short drive away, Alta Vista residents have access to quick and easy one-stop shopping.
Due to its central location, Alta Vista is also within walking distance from some of Ottawa’s top shopping destinations, including the antique shops of Old Ottawa South, the eclectic businesses found in the Glebe, and the Billings Bridge Shopping Centre. The neighbourhood is also close to the Rideau River, Vincent Massey Park, Hog’s Back Park, and Mooney’s Bay, providing residents with convenient options for enjoying the natural scenery of Ottawa during the evenings and weekends.
Alta Vista is known as a family-friendly neighbourhood due to its single family homes, a wide selection of both public and Catholic schools, and a variety of parks and playgrounds. However, as the neighbourhood continues to grow, new buildings and property types have helped make Alta Vista an ideal destination for any home buyer. The neighbourhood amenities and convenient transit option have made Alta Vista an ideal choice for prospective homeowners, whether they’re interested in a detached bungalow with a private yard, a community-oriented townhome, or a condo apartment offering views of the city.
