It’s that time again! The Great Glebe Garage Sale will take place this Saturday, May 24th, in one of Ottawa’s most popular neighbourhoods. For those who don’t know, the Garage Sale is an annual tradition that has been a part of the Glebe since 1986. Every year in May, the Glebe Community Association works hard to organize the event, which features several vendors set up along Bank Street in addition to the many homeowners who put out items for sale in their yards and driveways.

The Great Glebe Garage Sale has come to be known as one of Ottawa’s yearly highlights. Residents and visitors to Ottawa alike look forward to the sale every year, and come from all areas of the city to participate or find a great bargain. The strong sense of community in the Glebe is reflected by the Garage Sale, as several members of the neighbourhood get together to volunteer for the event. Also, all vendors are encouraged to donate a portion of the proceeds from their garage sales to the Ottawa Food Bank.
The Garage Sale’s official hours of operation are between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., but if you’ve ever been before then you know it can be a good idea to get there early! Many homeowners will have their best items out for sale by the time more people are arriving, so if you’re looking for a great deal on something specific keep that in mind. You may want to take your time walking up and down each residential street, so make sure to wear some comfortable shoes and take plenty of breaks! Bringing some environmentally friendly bags is also a good idea if you’re planning on buying anything you won’t want to carry around.

The Glebe Community Association reminds visitors that all regular parking rules are in effect during the sale, and with the amount of people expected to show up, the streets can get fairly congested. They advise that you walk, ride your bike, or take public transit to the Garage Sale rather than drive. If you do drive, try to park outside the neighbourhood as driving through the streets during the event can be dangerous.
In addition to garage sales outside residential homes, you’ll also find food trucks, table vendors, and other entertainment throughout the Glebe during the sale. The shops and restaurants along Bank Street will be open for business as usual, with many of them offering special discounts or promotions on the day of the Garage Sale.
